As Poe completed "The Premature Burial" in May and first published it in July, Smith's poem might have influenced Poe's tale. See note 15 in Mabbott's edition of the tale.
Note 15 says that the poem appeared in New York's Columbian Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine of January 1844. The note in green ink in the upper left margin of the first photocopied page says to "Compare to Columbian Mag" and the manuscript note titling the photocopy clearly indicates "The Rover, vol. II, 1844." The manuscript note in blue ink on the blank third image also says: "Seba Smith's poem in Rover."</text>
