Description
Photocopy of page 165 from Arthur Hobson Quinn and Edward Hayes O'Neill's edition of The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. The bracketed passage from the tale "Hans Phaall" provides an example of Poe's longterm engagement with the idea that truth lies in surfaces rather than depths. Dupin argues the same in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." See note 30 in Mabbott's version of the tale.
The Quinn/O'Neill edition of The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe was originally published by Knopf in 1946. The copy of the Quinn/O'Neill edition in the Mabbott Poe Collection, from which the photocopy was made, is dated 1971. Thus, Mabbott himself did not use this edition and wrote neither the marginalia made in the book itself nor the marginalia on the photocopy.
