The story relayed in the article might have inspired some aspects of Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," though it is doubtful that he read this particular article. According to Mabbott's introduction to his version of the tale the editor of the Chronicle copied the article for Mabbott. The transcription in the research file is in Mabbott's hand.
