Clipping of a photocopy of James Rees' "The Old Night Owl" from the 28 June 1843 Dollar Newspaper. In his introduction to "The Raven" Mabbott notes that Poe originally based the poem on an incident with an owl, as recounted in Susan Archer Weiss's Home Life of Poe (1907). "The Old Night Owl" appeared in the same issue of The Dollar Newspaper as the first part of Poe's "The Gold Bug."
