Photocopy of the first page of [Edgar Allan Poe,] "[Review of:] Ballads and other Poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow," Graham's Magazine (March 1842): 189.
Poe's March 1842 review of Longfellow's Ballads and other Poems for Graham's Magazine. Mabbott placed brackets to the left of the quotation of French cynic Chamfort, with which he begins the review. The quote says: "You can wager that every public idea, every received convention, is a stupidity, for it pertains to the greatest number of people." ["Il y a à parier que toute idée publique, toute convention reçue, est une sottise, car elle a convenu au plus grand nombre."] In note 16 of his version of the tale Mabbott cites the review as one of several instances where Poe had quoted the same aphorism before having Dupin utter it in "The Purloined Letter." Mabbott's marginalia is visible in the photocopy. The blue ink on the photocopy is in Maureen Mabbott's handwriting.
