Description
Photocopy of pages 214-215 from The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Vol. VIII: Literary Criticism--Vol. I, ed. James A. Harrison (New York: Thomas E. Crowell & Co., 1902). Poe's review of Alexander Slidell's The American in England (New York, 1835) originally appeared in the February 1836 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger. The passage bracketed in the photocopy refers to the proverb "truth lies at the bottom of a well," which Dupin contests in "Murders in the Rue Morgue." See note 30 in Mabbott's version of the tale.
The book is Mabbott's own copy of the Harrison edition of Poe, which he annotated in preparing his edition. His annotations are visible in the photocopy. The annotations in blue ink on the photocopy are in Maureen Mabbott's hand.
